I have to admit that Union Sq is one of my favorite parts of all of NYC... the energy there is what cities should be about; and like bee-to-honey I always made a stop by Virgin music to see what's new and just generally soak in music in all forms... so I was a bit shocked when I saw this:

(52 E 14th St, New York, NY 10010)

I always wondered how big box record stores could stay afloat when digital has basically become the primary means of accessing music... I thought that maybe this store would survive just because of the sheer foot traffic in the area... wrong.

To save you the trip the discount on music was about 20% when I went in yesterday, but they've priced everything at the original cd price. So a CD that was originally 16.99 that was on sale for 12.99 (they're always on sale, right?) is going for 16.99 minus the 20% discount. Don't do the math, trust me this ain't a deal... but when stuff starts to get to 35%>, I would say run, don't walk.

I did a drive by and was making a mental note of what I want to snag: depeche mode (the cd before this recent one), some old slum village, 1999 (which they were blasting when I walked in), Steely Dan... list goes on.

Next time I'm in Union Sq, probably this weekend, I'll update on where the sale is...

Peace

That sucks- The CD is dead...the web is not driving allot of companies out of business format change is. Companies built on dated formats will be shaken out of the market mix. Virgin will survive Sir Rich Branson is 3 steps ahead.
