Saudi terror mastermind Osama bin Laden’s life was snuffed when a CIA-led team attacked a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. a variety of News agencies have boasted being the first to report this world changing story but once again Twitter has trumped the traditional news media with it's ability to allow primary sources to "Live Tweet" events in "Real Time". A man in pakastan unknowingly reported the raid as it happened. Twitter user, Sohaib Athar, who tweets as @ReallyVirtual, reportedly tweeted the raid, and his reactions so far. Athar describes himself as “an IT consultant taking a break from the rat-race by hiding in the mountains with his laptops.” This is a great example of how the new ecosystem is rapidly being reshaped by social media. So much so that major media outlets are feverishly working on algorithms that will allow them to data mine the twittersphere for multiple accounts of breaking news. Natural disasters have been realiably broken by trending topics and algorithms such as this. Be sure Twitter is becoming the canary in the cold mine for breaking news.
