A new social network aggrigator called Chi.mp launched today! I am excited about it because I have been beta testing it for about a month now. It ushers in a new wave of social networking tools that will allow you to maintain better control of your social network, your social identity and your "personal brand" by bringing your feeds into one place. A variety of others exist but I will write about them later.
Signing up on Chi.mp allows you to create a personalized domain using the .mp domain. My domain
http://grandison.mp take a look for an example of how it gathers all your lifestream feeds into one place. I painlessly and successfully linked my UrbanThinking.net, flickr, delicio.us, and facebook feeds into one page.
I suggest you register at least your
family name before anyone else does, especially if you do not own the dot com, dot info or dot net domains yet. This is tool hot because it allows you to have the very cool and professional [first name ] @ [last name] dot mp email address. Chi.mp will even redirect this to your email account of choice.
This service also offers the ability to have separate identities called "personas" for different groups you interact with online. You can have one for work, one for friends and one for family. They are each designated by their email address from your address book. Only those personas you designate in your settings can see the page that their email address allows them to view. It's still a much for me to deal with (since I have more than 2000 email addresses) and I never found the time to set up this feature, but it's available for those of you who want to use it. The feature I used most the the feature that syncs up all of your status posts across your networks. It tied together my Facebook and Twitter accounts relatively easily. The Facebook set up was a bit tough but once it is working it is worth the time setting up access.
On a side note, I was displeased that the site did not work with Linked-In or Plaxo my business points of contact in the social sphere. Funny thing is I tweeted a brief note about my displeasure on this topic and within 5 minutes one of their reps had intercepted my tweet and replied (@grandison) that Linked-in would not provide their API to Chi.mp but they were working on it. This is a great example of a positive use of twitter by a business other businesses should take not and get their PR departments searching keywords on Twitter. Booooo to Linked-in, they are not playing fair in the social universe and it will mean bad "business karma" for them. Ultimately, this leads me to believe Linked-In may be attempting to set up a similar service as Plaxo has (Plaxo was not available either).
All said, I like the concept of allowing people to easily set up a website with a personal domain that acts as a hub for their social network life stream. Sign up and get your name quick before it's gone, I' sure it will get more services and develop as time goes on.
