Fetch! Lunchtime Rush is an app that is sure to blow the minds of your kids! It is meant to allow kids to practice math in a game-like environment that uses Alternate Reality (AR) as a fun hook. AR means you to use your phone or Tablet's camera to overlay "virtual" objects on real things in your environment. Fetch uses a card cut-out with numbers and a small QR code to display pieces of sushi for the child to count.
The free FETCH! Lunch Rush app (iTunes App Store link) requires a bit of quick work from you before you can use it with your kids-- you need, scissors, a printer and paper to get started. The app displays arithmetic problems which have answers that range from one to ten. The goal is to point the iPhone or iPod touch’s camera at the AR marker with the correct answer and touch the marker on the screen. 3D drawings of sushi appear floating over the paper in the the iPhone’s display and tapping the screens provides feedback on the answer.
I think it is a very innovative game and it shows PBS and Ogmento are trying to innovate and push the boundaries of how kids learn...
That said, I played it with my 3 yr old (clearly not the target age range) and she loved the sounds and animations and it was a good kinesthetic way to get her think about addition, by showing her the symbols, and what the numbers represented... but ultimately, she just went from number to number till she reached one that triggered the correct response.
I like the fact that it had her walking around the room searching for the correct amount of sushi was good. Ultimately, I think It should be a fun learning game for school age youngsters. Even my 3 year old had a blast trying it, although she can't read, she had fun seeing the sushi appear on each marker and guessing answers to the math problems. I think the games execution was great but the context was a bit weak (unless the show talks about sushi a lot)...I think sushi was the wrong food, how many kids like or even know what sushi is? Burgers may have been better...

This app promises futuristic learning fun for all!
