Media Integration Tools for the Music Classroom

I am sitting in Dave's lecture and getting so excited about tapping into all these tools online with my classroom!

The kids were absolutely wonderful today. We had out first day of classes, and for all my nerves over the past few days getting ready, I was so pleasantly surprised with how everything went!

We are in a professional development workshop on Web 2.0 and I'm just getting so turned on to using this technology with my students, or rather, inviting them to go out and use the technology for their own projects.

My school's network limits the media sites I can look at, so I need to find other ways that I can get music and videos into a centralized site for my students to listen to at home. I'm open to feedback on the best way to optimize this function for my World music and American music courses. I may choose to use Google docs to upload the music files, and then embed the Google docs site into my moodle. is there a better way? What about slideshows?

Is one photosharing page better than any others, in terms of being able to integrate various media and/or for accessibility to the students?

Yes, there is a better way!

Post them here!

Seriously...if you look at the front page and click on the "+ add a video" link you can then copy the "Embed code" from most any video site you can re-direct the video here. It will then fool the filter at your school into thinking the video is not hosted on the site that is being filtered.

Once this is done you can then click the link "Get embed code" link on your new video page to copy the code, and then paste the video code directly into your classroom blog page on Moodle.

If you prefer not to use this method the Google Docs method you spoke of will work but why create a new page to link to, it will be a bit less elegant and more confusing to students since they will open new windows for each video. Just embed the videos directly into your Moodle blog page. The good thing about this method is it will allow you to share the page with only your students so I understand if you use it.

Another method, if you use the Firefox browser (you should be using this browser whenever possible because it is more resistant to viruses), is to download the video using Download Helper (a Firefox extension) and bring the videos to class on a hard drive or re-upload them on Kaltura a Open Source video server. This service will host the videos for free (up to 10 gigs). It has some cool features that will even allow students to remix videos you upload. It should work well with Moodle since they are both open source.

In terms of Slideshows this site has a photo feature as well. Take a look at the MEDIALAB tab and go to PHOTOS. Click on the "+ Add Photos" tab at the top of the page and upload follow the instructions to upload videos. You can even email or send them via your cell phone or even Flickr. Once you have uploaded them create an Album for them and you will see a link called "Get Embed code" you can then get a direct link to the photos or a link to embed them in a page like this:

If you choose not to use this site I would recommend using Photobucket because it allow you to create the most creative looking slideshows and to share with a select group of people. Flickr is good too but if you upload allot of pics or create more than 3 albums, you will need to pay the yearly $24 fee.

Good luck!

Hope this helps!
