I spent a large part of my professional life working in Soho NY. I can remember seeing Banksy's strange, black and white photorealistic stencils and graffiti art works on dark graf strewn doorways or on the sides of buildings, thinking how dope they were and wondering who created them. Guerilla artist Banksy is now a famous urban legend who shows (illegally) in galleries around the world. He is famous yet he must remain anonymous to keep from getting arrested. This is the part of Graffiti / street art culture which keeps him underground and connected to the URBAN streets... personally, I think it's great to know you still might see his works anywhere... I have always wondered if he would ever capitalize on his work and get paid to create works like the guys in Tats Cru or Shapard Fairey.
Well, Banksy has just dropped a film that shows you how his subversive works are created (how's that for capitalizing on his work!).
I think this film could be akin to capturing the early career of Basquait, (maybe that's a bit of a stretch) who started out creating street art and graffiti. I would have loved to see him paint and learn his secrets (prior to his death), so I must support and post the trailer...I can't wait to see the film! Check it out and you may learn who did the piece that you walk by everyday.
To celebrate this weekend's opening of Banksy'sExit Through The Gift Shop in theaters (NYC, LA, San Fran, Berkeley, Palo Alto and San Rafael) Wooster Collective will be hosting an afterparty April 16 and April 17 at the famed street art watering hole Max Fish (178 Ludlow Street, New York, New York) starting at 9pm. Join us... to talk about the film after you've seen it at the Sunshine Theater or Lincoln Plaza Cinemas.
