A New Startup Applies the Grupon Idea to Solar Energy

I love any idea the promotes sustainable energy... and crowed sourced discounts for those who want to help the environment sounds like a great match. This type of company could benefit urban communities more than any other. The U.S. startup called One Block Off the Grid, is making it easier to do this by promoting "Grupon like" deals on Solar power installation.

Video: Why solar group discounts are smart from One Block Off the Grid.

Many homeowners are anxious about the process of going solar because it’s difficult to know which installers are trustworthy. So, in addition to providing a group discount, they also evaluate installation companies on eleven different factors to find the best one in your area. The companies finds locations nationwide where contractors install solar power systems.  The company screens the contractors, and checks if they'll offer a discount if One Block can deliver a large enough group of customers. Once the contractor agrees, the deal is posted on One Block's web site. Potential customers then sign up to have the contractor come over and offer an estimate. If enough people agree buy the panels, the deal "tips," and everyone who signed up get the discount. They also make sure the installer is staying in close communication with you throughout the process. If anything ever needs to be expedited or escalated, they’ll act as your advocate. The discount is usually in the range of 15%, plus a $500 rebate. One Block Off the Grid makes it easier and more affordable for homeowners to go solar by organizing group discounts, vetting solar installers, and providing you with objective information and advice along the way. I hope urban homeowners consider working together to save the environment while saving some money.
