How to Diversify Urban Economies by Investing in IT: A Model IT for Detroit

As I have told anyone who cares to listen, I am a very strong proponent of diversifying Detroit's economy. Recent reports that information technology jobs are exploding in the Detroit area are encouraging. However, these jobs must be situated in the city if the city is to realize any of the investment that comes with new jobs...The city's tax base, and education infrastructure will automatically improve. The crime problem will begin to abate when you get people jobs. However, the…

Detroit's Schools Inch Closer to Privatization

This week, on Monday, June 20, Detroit Public Schools, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and its State Mandated Emergency Financial Manager Roy Roberts announced the formation of an independent school district, the Education Achievment System.  Under a somewhat novel, and at the outset controversial proposal, the new system would start with the worst-performing DPS schools and then absorb another 5% of underperforming state public and charter schools, numbering about 200.  The new EAS will be…

Health Care Reform: What Took So Long?

We finally got health care passed and it didn't cost the President one of his, well, you know what I mean. Now comes the easy part, what the White House should have been doing the entire year, which is selling the strong points of his health care bill and get the ridiculously obstructionist GOP off his, well you know what.

Just getting to the point where a vote could be held, and there was really no doubt once the abortion piece was solved, was nothing short of…

Neutralize Sen. Lieberman Now...Health Care Reform Must Pass in '09

Can someone please tell me how Sen. Joe Lieberman I-Connecticut) was allowed to live politically after opposing President Obama during the election, and narrowly getting re-elected in 2006? I mean, really, Ned Lamont. How could you, man? And I know for damn sure the American people are not going to allow him to shut down health care reform out of his responsibility to protect the insurance industry, which probably accounts for up to 80% of Connecticut's revenue stream. I don't blame him for… Continue
