ARTICLES :: Introducing Dan Black
Seldom has an album twisted so thrillingly through so many styles,
nor over-flowed with so much melody and feeling. Little wonder that
Black is being tipped by the world’s critics and bloggers as one of
2010’s most promising break through artists. If his name already
rings a bell, that’s perhaps because you've heard everyone from
Zane Lowe to Perez Hilton raving about HYPNTZ, the Notorious BIG
cover which first brought Black to the world’s attention when
unsigned in 2008. Continue reading post...

Black Milk :: Give the Drummer Sum
BIO :: Black Milk
Born and raised in Detroit on the sounds of A Tribe Called Quest
and De La Soul, Curtis Cross found out at an early age that he had
a talent for hip-hop, especially for beats. He spent hours in his
basement -- at first with just a cheap drum machine and a home
karaoke system, eventually moving up to more sophisticated MPCs and
samplers -- making tapes. One of these tapes got into the hands of
fellow Detroiters Slum Village, who were impressed by what they
heard and invited Cross to produce a track on their 2002 mixtape
Dirty District, as well as on their official full-length Trinity
(Past, Present and Future). After that, Cross, who was going as
Black Milk, teamed up with producer RJ Rice, Jr. (or Young RJ), as
the group B.R. Gunna, rhyming and making beats on the duo's 2004
release Dirty District, Vol. 2. That same year, Slum Village, who
were looking for production work because usual beat-makers Waajeed
and Kareem Riggins were busy with other projects, hired B.R. Gunna
for 11 of the 13 tracks on their Detroit Deli LP. In 2005, without
a label and with his group on hiatus, Black Milk went on to release
Sound of the City, which was more of a mixtape than a typical
album, on his own Music House Records, and shortly after worked on
SV's self-titled record. By this time, indie rap label Fat Beats
had heard Black Milk's work, which many compared to that of the
late J Dilla and producer/MC Madlib; impressed, the label signed
him in 2006 and issued his official solo debut, Popular Demand, in
March of 2007. Late that same year, a joint Bishop Lamont/Black
Milk tape, mixed by DJ Warrior, hit the streets, a slightly
modified version of which was mastered and released commercially by
Music House early in 2008, and just a few months later, his
collaboration with fellow Detroiter Fat Ray, The Set Up, came
out.

Lykke Li :: Dance Dance Dance
BIO :: Li Lykke
Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson (born March 18, 1986 in Stockholm,
Sweden), better known by her stage name Lykke Li, is a pop
singer.
She was raised by artistic parents (her mother was a photographer,
her father is a musician); she lived in Portugal for five years and
spent winters in Nepal and India. At one point, she worked as a
dancer on Swedish TV.
Li released her first album, Youth Novels on LL Recordings in the
Nordic region on 4 February 2008, prior to a wider European release
this June. The album was produced by Björn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn
and John) and Lasse Mårtén. It was released in the United States on
6 May 2008.
The 2007 EP “Little Bit” had some success on its release. Stereogum
named her an artist to watch in October 2007, describing her music
as a mix of soul, electro and powdered-sugar pop.

Santogold :: L.E.S Artistes
BIO :: Santogold
As a solo project comprised of a revolving door of members, the
heart and face of Santogold is vivacious frontwoman Santi White.
Paired with John Hill, her former counterpart from ska-punk band
Stiffed, the two use their common backgrounds as production-savvy
musicians to make bombastic, bass-oriented songs that fuse punk,
reggae, grime, and indie rock with electro. Tribal island rhythms
merge with flavorful digital chirps and blips, culminating in an
original sound that is comparable to M.I.A. but draws from too many
other influences to be considered just another M.I.A. knockoff.
While showcasing her array of vocal styles at a Stiffed show, White
was spotted by Martin Heath, who made her an offer to record a solo
record on Lizard King, the label responsible for the successful
promotion of the Killers. After failed attempts with a few
mainstream pop producers, White and Hill decided to pair up with a
crew of like-minded musicians -- including Freq Nasty, Disco D,
Switch, Spank Rock's Naeem, Xxxchange, Steel Pulse guitarist
Clifford Moonie Pusey, and none other than M.I.A. herself. In only
three weeks, the full-length Creator was completed and scheduled
for release in January of 2008, though it took until April for the
album (retitled to simply Santogold) to actually hit shelves.
